TIME TRAVEL , FEB 2009 DELEGATION: CONNECTING PEOPLE.

TIME TRAVEL WORKSHOP:

• Creating bonds and new friendship across rural and urban communities: Sakie from Ekubusisweni, a deep rural community exchanging details with Kate from Suid Natal Primary School.
• Deep in discussion, identifying a site for Time Travel and way forward
• Welcoming our Swedish friends but more importantly, welcoming new recruits: Dinah Naidoo of Marburg Secondary School is introducing herself.
• Meeting Dr. Nyawose, a respected educator and Ugu councillor
• Thanking both our guests and participants is Lynne, Twinning chairperson

BRIDGING AGES CONFERENCE - IN CAPE WINELAND DISTRICT,OCT 2008

4.Mayor Clarence Johnson, Cape Winelands District together with Tizzie Mangiagalli from Worcester museum, welcomed delegates.

5.Port Shepstone Twinning handed certificates of appreciation to organisers and speakers .

6. Gunnar presenting Wolwekloof Learning Academy, a folkbilding concept (giving people a second chance.)

7.Bridging Ages annual report was presented by Ebbe, president of Bridging Ages. He was joined by Jon Hunner- vice president of Bridging Ages, from USA, and other members from Italy and Finland.

"The Bridging Ages network at a glance

Historic Environment Education and Time Travels started at the Kalmar County Museum in 1985, and over the last ten years has spread to and developed in several other institutions and countries. The Bridging Ages network was formed at a symposium in Vimmerby, Sweden in November 2004.
The Bridging Ages network consists of about 25 institutions - museums, schools and universities - from ten countries – Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, England, Italy, USA, Kenya and South Africa. Kalmar County Museum in Sweden is the coordinator of the network.

The mission of the Bridging Ages network is to support and inspire the development of Historic Environment Education and Time Travels - through seminars and conferences, via a website www.bridgingages.com, newsletters and a mailing list, and in common projects "

"What is Historic Environment Education?

The focus is on historic sites in the local environment and their history – for instance buildings, grave fields, industries, roads. In a Time Travel you dress up in period clothes and for some hours take part in the life of the historic site. The Time Travel is always about a specific year and what happened on the site that year, that day: Rome 404 AD, Reval (Tallinn) 1483, Minneapolis 1912. The participants are those persons living in or visiting that place. With all your senses you experience the life of a historical time and site in your own neighbourhood!

This is a way of learning but also of finding your own identity and comparing the life then and now. Historic Environment Education and Time Travels are mostly collaborative work between schools, museums, universities, historical societies and even the public. "

TIME TRAVEL IN CLANWILLIAM, 2000 B.C

On 14 October 2008, our delegation participated in Time Travel in Clanwilliam, 200 B.C, the San culture with students from Calnwilliam. In addition, we viewed rock paintings and visited heritage sites.

Some of the advantages of Time Travel and Historic Environment Education - ( reference -7 Steps by Ebbe Westergren)

• high quality learning which gives students historical facts,understanding,skills and deep knowledge of the past.
• Creates meaning for students in their everyday lives and in the place where they live.
• Gives insight into fundamental principles such as democracy,environment, equality and diversity.

Time Travel introducion to Port Shepstone

The above article is an extract from Bridging Ages Newsletter 1, 2008.

Sequence of events:

1.Tormod Nesset, OSAK chairman, sent documentation in 2006, introducing this concept to PSTA.. A new idea, hence it had taken many e-mails and phone calls of convincing.

2.Ebbe , Helen, Carina and Bobbo representing both Kalmar County Museum and OSAK visited this region in June 2008. A detailed programme , exposing this delegation to schools, institutions, museum and historical sites and ending with a workshop in Time Travel concept concluded this trip. A sub committee was elected. On this committee are representatives from the various institutions, viz Pauline Duncan, Marlene Naicker, Justice Ngesi, Judy Mkhize, late Prince Hlope, Penny Letsatsi, Joe Venter and Gulshera Khan as convenor.

3.This was followed by a delegation of 4 from this region to Sweden, for training and to further deepen the understanding of this concept. The delegation was:

• Judy Mkhize - Nobamba School
• Justice Ngesis - UGU
• Penny Letsatsi - HCM, Museum
• Silvy Ragoobar - Marsec ( Marburg Secondary School)

4. A further 6 participants attended the Time Travel conference in Cape, as outlined in blog below.

5. Ebbe and team will return in February 2009 to commence with training.

6.The Sub committee is busy with planning. Participating institutions will be shortly notified of the programme which is scheduled from 8 - 19 February 2009 g.k

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TIME TRAVEL AND HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION.

The conference was held in the Cape Winelands from 8 -10 October 2008. Participants from 10 different countries around the globe were in attendance.

The conference was a huge success , commencing with a report from the Bridges Ages Board, news from around the globe on different experiences, presentations by museum professionals and a university and education perspective. It was opened by the Mayor of the Cape Wineland District. Delegates participated in a short Time Travel to 1773 at Wolwekloof.

The highlight of the workshop was an African evening in the Township of Zwelethemba. Approx, 35 delegates continued their journey for the next 6 days to view heritage sites, participant in Time Travel in Clanwilliam, 2000BC and visited Robben Island. Delegates representing Port Shepstone were:

PAULINE WRITES

Gulshera and I went to Prince Mduduzi Hlophe's funeral today, held at the Bhuqu Sportsfield in Bhomela. Prince became involved in the twinning when the Time Travel group were here in May 2008. He met Ebbe, Helen, Carina and Bobbo at their home in Oslo Beach, and attended the Time Travel workshop, where he was elected on to the Time Travel committee.

Prince became ill 2 weeks before his death and I'm sad for him, his family and all the people in whose life he featured. Too many young South Africans are dying, and with a person like him, a lot of history has died as well.

TIME TRAVEL - October 2008

Time travel in Worcester 1773, Ebbe Westergren of Kalmar Lans museum , the founder of Time Travel - some 23 yrs ago is passionate of this method of teaching & learning. Living a period in history, makes sense, practical and interesting. Participating in this time travel project, being an Indian slave for two hours made me feel disempowered, frustrated and lonely.

WE NOW UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS TO BE DISENFRANCHISED.

This is a meaningful project for twinning. It further enhances our key objectives of nation building and reconciliation, empowerment, developing partnerships; networking and making our history come alive. Negative impact of world history must never be repeated. We must learn from our past and build on a positive future. Gulshera Khan
